Plan ahead for radon

Renovating? Plan for radon too.

A renovation or construction project is an opportunity to consider radon when making technical choices: floors, service routes, airtightness, ventilation and the future use of rooms.

Describe my situation
01

Consider radon before finalising the work

Are you replacing windows, insulating the building or converting a cellar into a living space? Describe the project, the rooms concerned and your timeframe. Existing plans and measurements help prepare the approach.

A survey over approximately one week can help identify a problem and understand how radon moves through the building before decisions are finalised. The method is chosen according to the building and project.

02

Coordinate ventilation, energy efficiency and radon

Changes to the building envelope or air exchange rate can alter radon concentrations. It is therefore useful to consider energy efficiency work and radon measures together.

Where the survey identifies a problem, the mitigation proposal takes planned work into account. Pipe routes and access can then be coordinated with those working on the project.

03

Plan protection from the construction stage

In a new building, radon protection is planned with the design professionals. Airtightness where the building meets the ground, service penetrations and provision for measures beneath the slab are among the points to consider.

Robert can review your project and define the scope of his support. Responsibilities and the documents required for the permit should be checked with the appointed professionals and the competent authority.

04

Check the effects and document the next steps

When Robert carries out mitigation, concentrations are monitored before and after the work. A report describes the work and presents the results. A passive detector campaign is arranged to confirm the situation through a recognised measurement.

After other alterations, the verification approach is adapted to room use and how the completed building operates. Its schedule is planned as part of the project.

A measurement, a result, a question. Let’s start there.
